Billed
as “exciting new Australian tenor” since his Operatunity Oz triumph, Roy came to national prominence after his
televised performance of the Duke
in Opera Australia’s Rigoletto at
Sydney Opera House, in 2006 to a full house and an audience of over one million
TV viewers. As a result he recorded several items in the Operatunity Oz CD, conducted by Andrew Greene.
Roy is currently studying voice under Anna Connolly and previously achieved an Associate in Music (Australia) part time, while earning a living in various things from Motor Mechanic to Carpenter Builder. He gained vital experience as a soloist prior to his professional debut with the Ashton Smith Singers and Choral Institute Melbourne as well as several Cantata’s and challenging works with the Miscellany Ensemble.
Principal roles in opera include; Turiddu – Cavalleria Rusticana (Melbourne Opera) which he received a Green Room nomination; Rodolfo – La Boheme (Melbourne Opera); Brueys, Admiral and Sailor – Nelson (Stuart Greenbaum) and of course Duca – Rigoletto (Opera Australia) as well as ensemble roles in Dead Man Walking at Sydney’s State Theatre. He will soon be appearing as Nemorino – Elixir of Love with Victorian Opera.
Roy also continues to delight audiences with his many concert appearances. They include Australian Pops Orchestra concerts ranging from New Years 06 and 07 (Sydney and Melbourne) and mid-year. He has been a regular feature with the Australian Music Events Opera in the Market, Opera in the Alps and Opera by the Lock concerts both in 2007 and 2008. By popular demand he was asked to appear in Canberra’s very own outdoor Opera event by Lake Burley Griffin this year after its huge success in 2007. He also performed with the prestigious Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra in their Irish Songs of Pride concerts last year. Other events include the Mozart Requiem, the Pavarotti Story - MCO and the launch of the 2007 Crown Christmas Spectacular to name a few.
To be released later in the year is a CD produced by ABC Classics under the baton of Andrew Greene with the impressive Queensland Orchestra. It will contain around sixteen tracks of favourite songs and arias, two of which are duets with David Parkin and Emily Burke respectively.
