History

Australian Music Events Pty Ltd was founded in 1995 by directors Graeme Wall and Margot Cory-Wall, whose love of music has shaped their own lives and inspired others to follow their dreams. As former professional opera singers in Australia and overseas, music educators and concert promoters, they bring many years of experience and expertise to their business of presenting “beautiful music in beautiful places.”

Australian Music Events was conceived to achieve the following aims:

  • To provide talented young musicians and singers with opportunities to perform with Australian and international conductors and soloists in a professional environment
  • To provide choral enthusiasts with stimulating and challenging opportunities to extend their vocal expertise and choral experiences
  • To introduce new audiences to popular musical performances in beautiful and unusual places
  • To hold various workshops for choral participants

The company is responsible for organising, promoting and staging several outdoor classical music concerts in Victoria that attract between 3,000 to 5,000 people to each concert. They are:

  • Opera in the Alps (Beechworth)
  • tass Opera by the Lock (Mildura)
  • Opera in the Market (Melbourne)

The Australian Scholars’ Springtime Concert in Melbourne is another Australian Music Events presentation set in an intimate concert venue to showcase the talents of promising young singers.

In 1999, Australian Music Events made a commitment to support medical research through Opera in the Market. From 1999 - 2003, proceeds supported cervical cancer research at The Royal Women’s Hospital and from 2004 - 2008, research at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

In 2009 Opera in the Market will be supporting Breast Cancer Network Australia.

In 1998 Lyn Swinburne founded Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) having been diagnosed herself with the disease in 1993. BCNA is now the peak national breast cancer ‘consumer’ organisation representing 196 member groups and more than 28,000 individuals in all states and territories. BCNA currently has a staff of 24 and a vast number of volunteers working for the organisation. Many will remember her wonderful brainchild - 'Field of Women' on the MCG signifying the number of women affected by the disease in Australia alone.
