We are very happy to share
with you news of the 2007 Australian Scholars Springtime Concert at BMW Edge on
Sunday 16 September, which was a great success.
Audience were treated to a
selection of arias, art song and oratorio and all contestants sang with energy,
passion and personality.
First place was awarded to
soprano Teresa Duddy who will have the opportunity to perform a solo at Opera
in the Alps. She is currently studying voice with
Merlyn Quaife at Melbourne University and gave a lively and energy driven
interpretation of one of Mozart’s most well known arias, Deh vieni, non
tardar from The Marriage of
Figaro.
The competition was fierce
and with the assistance of Antoinette Halloran as our primary adjudicator, we
also awarded two Honorable Mentions.
Janet Todd performed Let
the Bright Seraphim from Samson by Handel with a freshness and flexibility that is
rarely heard in this very challenging aria. Marianne Pierce was the second
recipient of an Honourable Mention and performed the very well known French
Arts song Apres un Reve with
superb control and sensitivity.
It would be remiss not to
mention the choral ensemble repertoire performed by the twenty-five
Melbourne-based scholars that made the afternoon a very memorable occasion. The
concert began with Totus Tuus by
Gorecki followed by the lively Viva il Vino from Cavelleria Rusticana, ending the concert with the traditional Gaelic
Blessing.
On 7 September 2008 at 3pm at BMW Edge, Federation Square, three young singers will be nominated to compete for Australian Vocal Scholar of the Year for 2009.
